TENT & TEMPORARY STRUCTURES PERMIT PROCESS

Temporary Tent Plan Review

(Auto Sales, Christmas Trees, Fireworks, etc.)

 

 

1.      Submit an online application with attached .pdf of description of tent usage via our website at PLAN REVIEW APPLICATION - Avalon Beach Mulat Fire Protection District. Mail or drop of applicable fees listed below to:

2.      Checks are only accepted for the payment of the fee(s) listed below and each fee is to be paid using a separate check. Fee(s) may be mailed or dropped off at the address listed above. Checks are to be made out to Avalon Fire Rescue.

3.      Final C.O. (Certificate of Occupancy) inspection needed upon completion of project.

4.      See Appendix A for a basic list of codes pertaining to tenting

5.      All tenting must adhere to the codes outlined in the FFPC 9th edition and NFPA 2023.

6.      Whether the plan review is approved or not, a report will be sent to the applicant. If approved, the report must be posted on site for the duration of the tent operation.

 

 

 

APPENDIX A

1.      Tents must adhere to the following where applicable:

a.      Tents shall be permitted only on a temporary basis – NFPA 1: 25.2.1.1

b.      All tent fabric shall meet the flame propagation performance criteria contained in Test Method 2 of NFPA 701, Standard Methods of Fire Test for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films. – NFPA 1: 25.2.2.1

c.       The finished ground level enclosed by any tent, and the finished ground level for a reasonable distance, but not less than 10 ft. (30 ft. for fireworks tent) outside of such a tent, shall be cleared of all flammable or combustible material or vegetation that is not used for necessary support equipment NFPA 1: 25.2.4.1

d.      Smoking shall not be permitted in any tent – NFPA 1: 25.2.4.2.2. For fireworks tent, smoking shall not be permitted inside or within 50ft. of the tent NFPA 1: 65.10.3.11.1

e.       In room or areas where smoking is prohibited, plainly visible signs shall be posted that read as follows: NO SMOKING. For fireworks tent at least one sign that reads as follows, in letters at least 2 in. high on a contrasting background, shall be conspicuously posted at each entrance or within 10 ft. of every aisle directly serving the tent area: FIREWORKS – NO SMOKING NFPA 1: 65.10.3.11.0

f.        Fireworks tent must have at least one sign that reads as follows, in letters at least 4 in. high on a contrasting background, shall be conspicuously posted on the exterior of each side of tenting: NO FIREWORKS DISCHARGE WITHIN 300 FEET – NFPA 1: 65.10.4.6.3

g.      No motor vehicle or trailer used for the storage of consumer fireworks shall be parked within 10ft. of tenting – NFPA 1: 65.10.4.6.2

h.      Portable fire extinguishing equipment of approved types shall be furnished and maintained in tents in such quantity and in such locations as directed by the AHJ – NFPA 1: 25.2.5

i.      Fireworks tenting – maximum distance of travel to any fire extinguisher does not exceed 35 ft.

ii. All other tenting – maximum distance of travel to any fire extinguisher does not exceed 75 ft.

i.        Portable fire extinguishers to be mounted so that the top of the fire extinguisher is no more than 5’ from the floor or the bottom of the fire extinguisher is no closer than 4” from the floor

j.        Aisles shall have a minimum clear width of 48 in – NFPA 1: 65.10.3.14.3.1.1

k.      Dead-end aisles shall be prohibited – NFPA 1: 65.10.3.14.3.2.4

l.        Exit openings from tents shall have a clear opening width of not less than 44 in. – NFPA 1: 65.10.4.8.5

m.    Exit signs shall not be required in tents that are not open for business after dusk – NFPA 1: 65.10.4.8.3

n.      Emergency lighting shall not be required in tents that are not open for business after dusk – NFPA 1: 65.10.4.8.4
